Dia Island: A Natural Escape
Dia Island lies just north of Heraklion and is part of the protected Natura 2000 network, known for its crystal‑clear waters, peaceful bays and untouched natural beauty. The island stretches roughly 5 km in length and rises steeply from the sea, creating dramatic cliffs and calm coves that have sheltered boats since ancient times. Its shape is famously linked to Greek mythology, where Zeus turned a sea monster into stone, forming Dia and its two smaller islets, Paximadi and Petalidi.

The Hidden Gem of Heraklion
The southern side of Dia features four serene anchorages, Agios Georgios, Kapari, Panagia and Agrilia, with an additional bay, Aginara, on the eastern edge. These coves offer some of the calmest waters near Heraklion, making Dia a favourite destination for swimming, snorkeling and relaxing at sea. The island’s waters are exceptionally clear, providing ideal conditions for exploring underwater life and enjoying the peaceful surroundings.

Wildlife & Peaceful Bays
Dia is also home to rare wildlife, including Eleonora’s falcons, Alpine swifts and other protected species that thrive in its quiet environment. Jacques Cousteau’s explorations revealed ancient harbour structures and shipwrecks, suggesting Dia played a role in Minoan maritime history. Today, the island remains uninhabited and untouched, a natural escape where guests on our private cruises from Heraklion can enjoy calm bays, pristine waters and a timeless sense of serenity.
